Prepare a turn without surprising others / LESSON 08

Prepare a turn without surprising others · California DMV Class C

8 min + practice · Original foundation lesson

Communicate early and then check for conflicts. A turn signal tells others what you intend; it does not require a pedestrian or cyclist to surrender priority. A bicycle lane has a limited turn-approach allowance, not a general car lane function. Missing a turn is a routing problem that can be corrected safely farther along.

Rules and conditions

Signal about 100 feet before a turn while still checking for conflicting road users. The signal communicates a planned maneuver; it does not grant priority or replace observation. When turning right, enter a permitted bicycle lane only within 200 feet of the turn and after checking for bicyclists. The limited approach allowance does not make a bicycle lane a general driving lane. If a turn is missed, continue until a safe and legal opportunity to change route appears. A route error is less dangerous than a last-second lane change or abrupt stop.

Worked comparison

For example, a driver plans a right turn at the next intersection. The defensible response is: Signal early and check for conflicts. Compare this with the mistaken proposal: Signal only after beginning the turn. The signal communicates a planned maneuver; it does not grant priority or replace observation. For example, a right turn is approaching beside a bicycle lane. The defensible response is: Check bicyclists; enter within 200 feet of turning. Compare this with the mistaken proposal: Drive in the bicycle lane for the entire block whenever convenient. The limited approach allowance does not make a bicycle lane a general driving lane.

Transfer and self-check

Review the sequence signal, mirrors, blind area, position, speed, and yielding. Explain why a last-second route instruction does not justify a sudden lane crossing. For a bicycle-lane approach, include both the permitted distance and the cyclist check.

WORKED EXAMPLE

A driver plans a right turn at the next intersection. Which response follows the applicable California handbook rule?

  1. Identify the relevant condition: A driver plans a right turn at the next intersection.
  2. Signal about 100 feet before a turn while still checking for conflicting road users.
  3. The signal communicates a planned maneuver; it does not grant priority or replace observation.
Answer: Signal early and check for conflicts.
Compare the other answer choices
Signal only after beginning the turn.

The proposal "Signal only after beginning the turn." conflicts with this applicable condition: Signal about 100 feet before a turn while still checking for conflicting road users. It does not resolve the stated risk: The signal communicates a planned maneuver; it does not grant priority or replace observation.

Assume signaling obligates cyclists and pedestrians to stop.

The proposal "Assume signaling obligates cyclists and pedestrians to stop." conflicts with this applicable condition: Signal about 100 feet before a turn while still checking for conflicting road users. It does not resolve the stated risk: The signal communicates a planned maneuver; it does not grant priority or replace observation.

Omit a signal when the destination is familiar.

The proposal "Omit a signal when the destination is familiar." conflicts with this applicable condition: Signal about 100 feet before a turn while still checking for conflicting road users. It does not resolve the stated risk: The signal communicates a planned maneuver; it does not grant priority or replace observation.

Try it, then explain it.

Complete a short set without looking at the example. After each answer, explain which evidence or rule supports your decision and why the alternatives do not fit.
