Anticipate fog, darkness, and crosswind · CDL General Knowledge

8 min + practice · Original foundation lesson

Visibility and side force can change abruptly. Fog can reflect high-beam light back to the driver, a move from shelter into wind can push a high-sided trailer, and dimming headlights reduces the illuminated stopping view. The right response is specific to the mechanism rather than a single rule to drive faster or use brighter lights.

Rules and conditions

Use low beams in fog and avoid speed that exceeds the available view. High beams reflect from moisture and can reduce useful visibility. Expect stronger wind effects on high-sided vehicles, especially when leaving a sheltered area. A sudden side force can move a tall vehicle even when the road surface is dry. At night, adjust speed so the vehicle can stop within the distance illuminated by the lights being used. Switching to low beams can reduce visible distance and therefore the suitable speed.

Worked comparison

For example, a commercial vehicle enters a fog bank. The defensible response is: Use low beams and reduce speed for visibility. Compare this with the mistaken proposal: Use high beams to cut through the moisture. High beams reflect from moisture and can reduce useful visibility. For example, a high-sided empty trailer leaves the shelter of a cutting. The defensible response is: Reduce risk by slowing and maintaining a firm, controlled steering grip. Compare this with the mistaken proposal: Assume a dry road prevents sideways movement. A sudden side force can move a tall vehicle even when the road surface is dry.

Transfer and self-check

For each condition, name what has changed: useful sight distance, lateral force, or illuminated roadway. Then identify the adjustment to speed, lights, or steering control. Preserve a view of the lane instead of staring into oncoming lights or the vehicle immediately ahead.

WORKED EXAMPLE

A commercial vehicle enters a fog bank. Which response best follows the general-knowledge guidance in the official commercial driver guide?

  1. Identify the relevant condition: A commercial vehicle enters a fog bank.
  2. Use low beams in fog and avoid speed that exceeds the available view.
  3. High beams reflect from moisture and can reduce useful visibility.
Answer: Use low beams and reduce speed for visibility.
Compare the other answer choices
Use high beams to cut through the moisture.

The proposal "Use high beams to cut through the moisture." conflicts with this applicable condition: Use low beams in fog and avoid speed that exceeds the available view. It does not resolve the stated risk: High beams reflect from moisture and can reduce useful visibility.

Follow another vehicle's tail lights at a very short gap.

The proposal "Follow another vehicle's tail lights at a very short gap." conflicts with this applicable condition: Use low beams in fog and avoid speed that exceeds the available view. It does not resolve the stated risk: High beams reflect from moisture and can reduce useful visibility.

Turn off all vehicle lighting to remove the reflection.

The proposal "Turn off all vehicle lighting to remove the reflection." conflicts with this applicable condition: Use low beams in fog and avoid speed that exceeds the available view. It does not resolve the stated risk: High beams reflect from moisture and can reduce useful visibility.

Try it, then explain it.

Complete a short set without looking at the example. After each answer, explain which evidence or rule supports your decision and why the alternatives do not fit.
